Post office issues new Dog Stamps

The US Post office issues a set of four stamps to celebrate the human-dog relationship. Artist John Thompson and Designer Howard Paine created these lovely images.

The four stamps are broken into categories

Pet Friendly Colleges

Some colleges allow your best furry friend to bunk in your dorm. Here are some pet friendly campuses.

1. SUNY Canton- The pet wing is a housing option for those looking for a furry roomate. No dogs, birds or snakes and a pet wing request must be completed in advance.

2. Vassar College- No poisionous pets and your roomate must give the green light no larger than 20 gallons.

3. University of Idaho- Pets welcome, university housing allows approved cats,fish kept in an aquarium and birds which must be caged at all times.

4. Lehigh University- Each sorority or fraternity chapter can have one cat or dog. Proper paperwork, registrastion and immunization history required. As for residence halls no animals with exception of fish permitted

5. MIT- Housing a cat in one of the four cat friendly areas of certain residence halls specified by the housing office. Each dorm designates a pet chair who maintains a list of all residential pets. The cat must be up to date on all vaccines as well as spayed or neutered and its owner responsible for its care,grooming and feeding.

How to keep your dog cool in summer

During extreme heat, our bodies cope by sweating. Dogs cope by excessively panting and dispelling heat from their paws. If a dog’s internal body temperature rises above 106ºF, damage to the organs may become permanent and irreversible. During the summer it is imperative to check your dog for signs of heat stroke which include:
Difficulty breathing
Excessive panting
Mucous membrane is redder than normal
Disorientation
Increased heart rate
Thick saliva
Vomiting
Bloody diarrhea
Collapse
Rectal temperature over 104º

If you suspect that your dog may have heat stroke:
Move your dog out of direct heat.
Take rectal temperature.
Gently hose cool water over your dog (Do NOT use ice packs or icy water)
Soak towels with cool water and place them over the dog’s head, feet, neck, chest, and abdomen.
Place a fan over the dog.
Call your vet or transport dog to the nearest emergency vet.

Dogs that are highly susceptible to heat stroke include:
Dogs with a brachycephalic face (short noses) such as Bulldogs, Pugs, Boxers, Pekingese.
Puppies
Senior dogs
Overweight dogs
Dogs with thick double-coats

Keep in mind that in this “concrete jungle where dreams are made of” the sidewalks and streets are extremely hot to your dog’s paws. Here are some tips to prevent heat stroke.
NEVER leave your dog in a parked car.
Avoid strenuous exercise on hot days.
Walk in shade and offer water to your dog.
Walk during morning and evenings.
Look into canine cooling coats.
Keep the AC running for your pet while you’re out.
If it is too hot to walk home, hail a cab. Most cabbies will let you carry your pup on your lap but be sure to tip them well.

PB&B Pawsicle
Ingredients:
3 Cups Filtered Water
½ Peeled Organic Banana
1 Tablespoon Organic Peanut Butter
3 Tablespoon of Organic Low-fat or non-fat plain yogurt.

Blend all ingredients until well combined and pour into an ice tray. Place in freezer until fully frozen. Offer a few cubes as an occasional treat.

Sunnyside Queens to finally get dog park!

Lou Lodati park in Sunnyside is finally getting a dog run, $700,000 had been put aside for this project. Human/canine water fountains will be erected as well as moving the basketball courts over. Project is to be competed by spring 2013.

Dogs traveling in cars especially for vacations is a growing trend. Safety is the utmost importance when driving so how do you keep your dog safe in case of an accident or sudden stop!

Dog seat belts and harnesses are a growing industry. About 89% of pets traveling in cars last year were not properly secured according to christina selter, founder of advocacy group bark buckle up. Because in an accident both people and pets are at risk.

Sales of dog travel products are rising. Take a brand such as Kurgo, it just hit $5 million in sales which has doubled annually since 2007. Automakers such as toyota and volvo report growing sales for its cargo barrier and harnesses sold via dealers.

Some states are creating legislation pushing for tighter regulation specific to pets traveling inside cars. Hawaii bars drivers from holding animals in their lap or letting them close enough to interfere with the driver.

Since 2009, the mobile food truck trend – where people get their fixins’ on four wheels- has been booming in cities like Portland, Los Angeles, Austin, Chicago and, of course, New York. Expect a few new vendors this spring to cater to all those urbanite foodies’ canine friends with mobile food trucks offering organic, preservative-free dog treats, cookies, and snacks.

Like, Fido-to-go in Chicago, Patrick Guilfoyle started Phydough in California, then Austin, and will be bringing the mobile treat truck to popular dog runs and parks around New York.
